It sure will reappear again in Escaping from Houdini and then she’ll be more stressed, to add more of the drama and yeah…like, how she deals with everything doesn’t make me take her PTSD seriously. There were a lot of things that didn’t add up towards the end, but hey, giving her PTSD and making her ignore her symptoms seems…healthy. Like, she got PTSD, which is reasonable, considering what has happened in the last book, but somehow everything piled up within her and dissolved towards the end, magically. Speaking of Audrey Rose: she seemed like a far weaker character than in SJTR. So yeah…one can read so much about that guy until the head explodes from wishing to be surprised by that dude. Thomas Cresswell might look like the perfect companion but OH BOY, he is repetitive! He’s either A) making comments on how about he and Audrey Rose should be involved romantically, B) looking deep in thought or C) doing really questionable stupid things although he’s acting like Sherlock Holmes most of the time. And reading the blurb of Escaping from Houdini made me question if I want to continue binge-reading this series or if I need a break from it because it looks like it’s gonna be a similar plot. But then, I got the feeling that things started to repeat themselves from SJTR.

The setting was so promising though! An academy settled in Castle Bran, Romania of all things murders that looked like Strigoi are real and that winter wonderland atmosphere…this, I actually liked more than Victorian London in Stalking Jack the Ripper. Which always were those were Audrey Rose was sneaking around the castle, NOT getting caught by what seemed like millions of guards?! There were so many dragging moments that I’m glad that I read this book within two days, simply to ESCAPE the boring scenes. Wow, this book could have been a hundred pages or so shorter. Audrey Rose and Thomas see no other way than to find out who poses as Dracula to stop the murders. But there’s no rest for the wicked when the first murder happens on the way to the academy and the second one a short while after, right at the academy. PlotĪudrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell travel to Romania to attend the forensic medicine academy, after needing some time off from the events that happened back in London.
